Scott Gwinnell- piano,
arranger, leader
Rich Fanning- trumpet
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, trumpeter Richard Fanning began playing professionally at age 18. Since then, he has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe at many prestigious venues including Radio City Music Hall, Red Rocks in Colorado, the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, the JVC Jazz Festival in Nice, France, the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and the Blue Note Jazz Club in NYC. Rich has toured with a number of music acts throughout his career, including tours with Perry Como, Natalie Cole, The Monkees, Gary Puckett, The Temptations, Illinois Jacquett and the Broadway show Cats. He has also backed up entertainers such as Ray Charles, Mel Tormé, Nancy Wilson, Four Tops, O’Jays, Rich Little, Grass Roots, Fifth Dimension, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and many others. Rich has a multi-platinum record award for his involvement on John Mellencamp’s Scarecrow album in 1985. Dr. Fanning holds three degrees from Indiana University, including a Master of Music in jazz studies and Doctor of Music in brass pedagogy and music literature.
John Rutherford- lead trombone
Trombonist John Rutherford has established himself as one of the area's most versatile and accomplished freelance musicians. A graduate of the University of Michigan, John has also studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. His symphonic experiences include regular performances with the Detroit Symphony, Michigan Opera Theater, and the Toledo Symphony. Internationally, he has performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Palermo in Sicily, the Jerusalem International Symphony, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra. As a chamber musician, John has performed with the Detroit Chamber Winds, Boston Chamber Ensemble, and the Michigan Chamber Brass. He is a founding member of the Motor City Brass Quintet and the Motor City Horns. His performances as a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble are recorded on Sony Classical. John has performed with many leading jazz and popular artists, including Ray Charles, Christian McBride, Michael Brecker, David Liebman, Terance Blanchard, Patti Austen, Clarence Clemens, the Four Tops, the Temptations and most recently touring with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. Brad Felt-
euphonium and tuba
For over 30 years, Brad Felt has been working to advance the role of both the Tuba and Euphonium as front-line improvising instruments in the idiom of modern jazz. As a product of the fertile Oakland University jazz program of the mid '70s, Mr. Felt went on to receive two fellowships for composition and performance from the National Endowment for the Arts and a creative artist grant for composition from the Michigan Council for the Arts. In addition to working in the Detroit area, he has led and co-led groups which have performed at such venues as The Hollywood Palace, Yoshi's at Jack London Square and Pearl's of North Beach. Brad has twice toured Europe as a featured soloist with Howard Johnson's Gravity (including the Barbican Centre in London, The Fabrik in Hamburg and many of the top festivals and performance spaces in Germany, Austria, and France) and has played Germany's prestigious Moers New Music Festival with Detroit's Kenn Cox and the Guerilla Jam Band. His first CD as a leader- Exordium- was released to critical acclaim. Felt has appeared on stage with: Ellis Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Hank Jones, Jerry Gonzalez, Bennie Maupin, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Annie Ross, Jon Faddis, The Four Tops, Martha Reeves, and many others. He is currently teaching applied improvisation at the University of Toledo.
Dave Horger- trombone, arranger
David Horger is a free-lance trombonist, arranger and music educator in the metro Detroit area. Most recently, he was a member of the United States Air Force Band of Mid-America until 2005. Prior to that he was on faculty of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY where he served as Adjunct Professor of Trombone and performed with the EKU Brass Quintet. He has also held the position Principal Trombone of the Symphony Orchestra of the Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City. David has degrees in trombone performance from the University of Michigan, University of Akron and an Advanced Diploma in Jazz Studies from the University of Miami.
Keith Kaminski- lead alto sax, flute, soprano sax,
clarinet
Keith Kaminski graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit with a degree in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media. Keith paid his dues on Carnival Cruise Lines for two years following graduation. Since then, Keith has been one of the most in-demand saxophonists in the Detroit area. This is shown through a prolific number of recordings with artists including: Alberta Adams (Born With The Blues, Say Baby Say), Joe Weaver, and Bill Heid. In 1996, Keith began his association with Johnnie Bassett and the Blues Insurgents, with whom he has toured Europe, Canada, and the United States. Keith performed and arranged the horn parts on their following albums: I Gave My Life To The Blues; Blues Across America: The Detroit Scene; Cadillac Blues; and Party, Party, Party. Keith is a member of the Bird of Paradise Orchestra and has recorded three albums with them: Hallelujah Train, Project X, and Bingo. Keith plays weekly with the Paul Keller Ensemble and the Bird of Paradise Orchestra at the Bird of Paradise Jazz Club in Ann Arbor. Keith has performed in backup bands for Burt Bacharach, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Bob Newhart, Little Eva, Johnny Johnson, and Big Jay McNeely.
Steve Wood- tenor sax, flute, soprano sax,
clarinet
Steve Wood started his professional training at Oakland University where he studied with Marvin "Doc" Holladay and Sam Sanders. He also studied with legendary trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave in his Jazz Development Workshop. In 1990 Steve won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship to study with jazz great, George Coleman. In his professional career Steve has performed with many of the world's finest jazz musicians. He has released two CD's as a leader, "Unanswerable Questions" on Alembic records in 1993 and "Deep Woods" on Corridor Records in 2000. As a sideman, he has appeared on recordings with Don Mayberry, Ron English, Bill Heid, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, Paul Keller, Scott Gwinnell, and others. He has toured Europe twice with the Paul Keller Orchestra, and maintains an active performance schedule at jazz clubs, concerts, and festival throughout Michigan and Ohio. Steve is currently teaching at the Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills MI and at Royal Music Studios in Royal Oak MI.
Justin Walter- trumpet
Justin was introduced to jazz
through his first mentor and middle school band instructor Louis Smith.
During high school Justin was an active member in the Community High
School jazz program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a member of the
program, Justin toured and gigged extensively, playing numerous
festivals here and abroad. Justin attended Humber College in Toronto
where he studied with jazz great Don Thompson. Having returned from
Toronto in 2000, he has been living in and out of the Ann Arbor area,
leaving once to join Alex Graham as the trumpeter for the Grand Hotel in
the 2002 summer season, and once more to play lead trumpet for a ship of
the Princes Cruise line. He is currently a member of NOMO, and the Scott
Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra as well as leading and playing in a number of
small jazz groups in the Ann Arbor/Detroit area. He began his
studies at the University of Michigan in the Fall of 2005 as a transfer
student and is currently working on the completion of his Undergraduate
degree. James Hughes- alto sax, flute, soprano sax
Saxophonist James Hughes, a Berkley, MI resident, is a part of the new crop of young Detroit jazz musicians. He has great respect and reverence for the tradition of jazz music and beautifully melds together the influence of past heroes with the new. James is a graduate of Wayne State University and has been performing in Detroit and around the country for over ten years. He can be seen playing with the Carl Cafagna North Star Sextet, Ed Nuccilli and Plural Circle, The Rat Pack Tribute Show in Detroit, and his own quartet. His discography includes Basement Vibes- The Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra, Father Bingo– Original Cast, and Two for the Road– Rea Deal.
Shannon Wade- double bass
Shannon Wade, double bassist,
graduated from Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music in 1998 with
a degree in composition and bass performance. After studying orchestra and
jazz bass with Peter Dominguez, Rodney Whitaker, Dan Pliskow, Edgar Meyer
and Richard Davis, he began performing with the Greater Lansing Symphony
Orchestra, Nashville Symphony Orchestra,
Scott Kretzer- drum set and percussion
A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in music education, Scott Kretzer is a freelance percussionist and teacher in the Northwest Ohio/Southeastern Michigan area. He teaches applied percussion at Adrian College, and has taught jazz drum set at the University of Toledo and applied percussion at Sienna Heights University. Scott performs regularly with the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra, Carl Cafagna and North Star Jazz, The Sixth Edition, and the Murphy’s Place Jazz Orchestra. Scott has performed with many top jazz artists including Clark Terry, Delfayo Marsalis, David “Fathead Newman”, Shirley Jordan, and Jon Hendricks. Scott was inducted into the Yamaha Young Artist Program in 1991 and has performed recitals, clinics, and master classes throughout the United States and Japan.
Patrick Hession- lead trumpet
In 1996, Hession joined The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, where he was the lead and feature trumpeter for almost three years. Hession then realized his dream in 2000, when he joined Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau Band, where he has been the lead trumpeter for over the past five years. Brandon Cooper-
trumpet
Brandon Cooper is a West Michigan native who came to Ann Arbor to attend the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance/Music Education. He has been an active performer in the Detroit area since then as a bandleader and sideman. He has lead his own bands Classix and The Lunar Octet for years and has been a member of the Paul Keller Orchestra (PKO) since its early days at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor. He is currently a member of the bands Nouveaute and Sunset Boulevard. His teaching experience includes working in the Ann Arbor, Howell and Brighton schools, and he is currently Brass Instructor at Milford Music and at his own private studio in the Brighton/South Lyon area. Brandon has performed at many festivals in the area including the Detroit Jazz Festival, Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, Detroit Festival of the Arts, the Columbus Jazz Festival and Arts Beats and Eats. He has also performed with The Temptations/Four Tops, Dee Dee Bridgewater and has toured Europe twice with the PKO.
Saxophonist and clarinetist Shannon Ford has been active as a freelancer and private teacher, both classical and jazz styles, in the Toledo area since 1991. As a saxophonist, she has performed throughout the Midwest and recorded with the saxophone quartet Sax 4th Avenue, recorded both Suites for Tenor Saxophone and Strings with the Alec Wilder Project, worked with the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, the Toledo Symphony (among other notable ensembles), and has enjoyed playing with the SGJO since June of 2006. As a clarinetist she has performed for many years as principal clarinetist of the Lima (OH) Symphony Orchestra, has enjoyed engagements with the Adrian Symphony, Toledo Opera, and Michigan Opera Theatre, and performs often with the Toledo Symphony. Shannon also is part of a flute, clarinet, and piano trio known as Mirepoix, and is currently recording and performing with the Toledo Clarinets, a chamber clarinet ensemble. Shannon is the Professor of Saxophone at Oakland University and Professor of Saxophone and Clarinet at Adrian College and has performance degrees from Indiana State University and Bowling Green State University. Her teachers include John Sampen, Ron Samuels, Gene Parker, and Mark Kieswetter.
Carl Cafagna- tenor sax, soprano sax,
flute, clarinet
Carl Cafagna is a full-time professional musician in Metro Detroit. He is active as a freelance saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist, vocalist, and drummer, having performed with the Temptations, Natalie cole, the Hot Club of Detroit, the late Mel Torme, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Marcus Belgrave, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Don Rickles, Bobby Watson, Verve Pipe, the Johnny Trudell Orchestra, Simone Vitale, Richie Cole, John Hendricks, the Detroit Lions Pep Band, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra, and the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. Carl owns Sweet Beat Productions, a music booking and publishing company, and runs six of his own bands, including North Star Jazz, the Big Band Machine, and SoundLove. He also appears regularly aboard the Detroit Princess riverboat. Carl is dedicated to music education, having taught music theory, jazz improvising, jazz performance, and elementary beginning band at Western Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, CASA School, Berkley Public Schools, East Lansing High School, St. Johns Public Schools, Walled Lake Central High School, and the Michigan Blue Lake Fine arts Camp. Currently, Carl runs the Sweet Beat Jazz Institute, which offers group jazz classes, teaches private lessons to students of all ages, runs a monthly jazz jam session, and holds music clinics at schools throughout Michigan. When he's not involved in all these activities, Carl enjoys spending time with his wife Kati, and daughters Anna, Grace, and Madeline. a senior at the University of Michigan where she studies jazz with Dennis
Wilson and classical with David Jackson. She has also studied with
Curtis Fuller and Wycliffe Gordon.
